1 Timothy 6

  1. Verses 1-2 talks about how bondservants should behave with their masters. What are the principles Paul teaches here? And can you apply this to your own life today?

  2. Read verses 20-21, these verses summarize the main points of the rest of chapter 6. In verse 20, the first command that Paul gives Timothy is to guard the deposit that was entrusted to him. What is it that Paul is telling him to guard? What is the second command in this verse given to Timothy?

Note: Verses 3-10 talk about false teachings and false understandings of the truth, including the rich falling to temptation. Verses 11-16 is Paul’s charge to Timothy to purse the righteous things rather than the things mentioned in verses 3-10. Verses 17-19 connect back with 9-10 and is a charge to the rich to hold on to what is true life. So in verses 3-10 we have the negative side and in 11-19 we have the positive.

  1. In verses 3-10 Paul gives many descriptions of the false teachers, those who teach a doctrine different from Jesus teaching. What are they?

  2. What is the main point Paul is trying to tell Timothy in verses 3-10? Hint: what does Paul say the false teachers think or assume? And what does he about the right way to think?

  3. From verses 3-10 which of these ideas or states of mind are you most prone to?

  4. In verses 11-16 Paul charges Timothy to “fight the good fight of faith”, give a 1-2 sentence summary of this section.

  5. Verses 9-10 Paul describes what happens to those who desire to be rich and love money. In verses 17-19 list at least 4 things that Paul tells Timothy to charge the rich to do/not do.

  6. This chapter lists a lot of behavior that the church should watch out for and for individuals to watch out for. What of these sticks out to you the most as something you should watch out for either in you or in the church today?
